Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 695 - Sikorsky HH-60H Seahawk, BuNo 163800 \'Firehawk 306\', Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron FIVE (HCS 5) \"Firehawks\", Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron FIVE (HCS 5) and its sister squadron HCS 4 are the only U.S. Navy squadrons that perform Naval Special Warfare Support (NSWS) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) as their primary missions. HCS 5 was established at NAS Point Mugu, California on October 2, 1988, when the NSWS mission of Helicopter Attack Squadron (Light) FIVE (HAL 5) and the CSAR mission of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron NINE (HC 9) were combined. The squadron relocated to NAS North Island in 2001. HCS 5 flies the Sikorsky HH-60H Seahawk and operates from remote bases ashore or on ships at sea, supporting numerous U.S. and coalition Special Operations units and Carrier Air Wings. The squadron is capable of deploying up to four, two-aircraft, detachments to any location in the world within 72 hours. HCS 5 has deployed in support of joint and combined military operations including DESERT SHIELD/STORM from 1990-1991, UPHOLD DEMOCRACY in 1994 and IRAQI FREEDOM from 2003-2006. The “Firehawks” also support numerous NSWS/CSAR exercises including: COBRA GOLD in Thailand, RIMPAC in Hawaii, UNITAS in Chile, TANDEM THRUST in Australia, COPE THUNDER in Alaska, WOODLAND COUGAR in Washington state, DESERT RESCUE and the A-10 Fighter Weapons School in Nevada. HCS 5 is the proud recipient of multiple awards including the Navy Unit Commendation, the Coast Guard Unit Commendation, and Noel Davis Battle Efficiency Award.
