Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 73CU, OV-10A Bronco, 67-14652, 601st Tactical Control Wing. Sembach AB, Germany. The 601st Tactical Control Wing (TOW) was activated on 1 July 1968 at Sembach Air Base in Germany to support the ever growing role of close air support operations in Central Europe. The Wing moved to Wiesbaden Air Base on 1 July 1973 and on 1 October 1973 the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS) was reactivated to become the Wing’s first assigned fllying unit. The 20th TASS, which has a distinguished combat record in Vietnam, started flying the O-2 aircraft but by June 1974 the first OV-10 Broncos began to arrive. Designed specifically for the Forward Air Control (FAC) mission by the Rockwell Corporation, the OV-10 was the workhorse of the FAC force in South-East Asia for over seven years. On 31 December 1975, the 601st TCW moved back to Sembach and on 4 July 1976 the 704th TASS was formed with OV-10s. This brought the wing strength up to three flying squadrons, the 20th TASS and the 704th TASS equipped with Broncos and the 601st TASS (activated on 1 July 1974) equipped with CH-53 helicopters. Since 1974, the O/-10s of the 601st TCW have logged tens of thousands of hours in close air support operations in Central Europe.
