Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1210 - Tucano T1, ZF208(N208PZ). The Short Brothers S.312 Tucano T Mk.1 is an adapted, license-built, version of the Embraer Tucano. It is the British Royal Air Force’s primary “Fast Jet Lead-In” training aircraft, used to prepare pilot cadets to fly the BAE Systems Hawk, and from there Britain’s front-line jet fighters, the Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon. The Tucano is nimble (fully aerobatic from +7 Gs to -3.6Gs), fast (up to 300 knots), and features jet-like handling qualities, all while retaining the docility and predictability crucial to a training aircraft. First flown in February 1986, the Shorts Tucano featured a more powerful Garrett TPE-331 turboprop engine, numerous structural refinements, and a redesigned cockpit. 158 Tucanos were built at Shorts’ production facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland (less one airframe which was destroyed by an IRA bomb blast). Production ended in 1995. The aircraft seen here bears RAF serial number ZF208 and Shorts serial number T33. ZF208 made its first flight in October 1989 and was delivered to the RAF the next month. It served as a trainer with 7 Flying Training School at RAF Church Fenton, Yorkshire, wearing the red and white training color scheme. Not long after delivery to the RAF the color scheme of the training fleet changed to an overall gloss black scheme to improve visibility during flying operations. ZF208 moved on to 1 Flying Training School at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, before being retired in February 2005. The aircraft was stored at RAF Shawbury until it was imported to the United States by R.S. Warbirds of Phoenix, AZ. ZF208 received new life in August 2011 when it was flown again after a complete restoration. Managed by Peak Aero/Applied Flight Dynamics, N208PZ is owned and flown by a private collector in Santa Monica, CA.
