Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1215 - KC-130J Hercules, 166765, Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 352, MCAS Miramar, California. Originally designated Marine Utility Squadron 352 (VMJ-352), the squadron was formed at MCAS Cherry Point on April 1, 1943. The squadron was originally assigned the Douglas R4D Skytrain aircraft, which it retained until its designation as Marine Transport Squadron 352 (VMR-352) in June 1944. The squadron began receiving the Douglas R5D Skymaster and soon moved to MCAS Iwa, Hawaii in February 1945. Based in Hawaii, the squadron conducted training and provided operational support in the Pacific Theater. From 1948-1949 the squadron was assigned to the Task Force Commander of Military Transport Service in support of the Berlin Airlift. Shortly after moving to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California in December 1949 the squadron began receiving the R4Q Flying Boxcar. The squadron would continue their legacy of transport operations in support of the Korean War. With the arrival of the KC-130F Hercules and the ability to perform in-flight aerial refueling, the squadron was re-designated as Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 (VMGR-352) in March 1961. VMGR-352’s rapid response capability and versatile aircraft were called upon during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and again in the Dominican Republic in 1965. In June 1965, the squadron began deploying elements in support of combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam and continued to do so until October 1972. In 1975, VMGR-352 accepted their first KC-130R with the new 1360-gallon external tanks. In 1986, VMGR-352 took on a new call sign and patch, changing their call sign from “Quebec Bravo” to the “Raiders”. From August 1990 to March 1991, the “Raiders” conducted combat aerial refueling operations in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Throughout the 1990s the “Raiders” participated in Operations Southern and Northern Watch, and deployed in support of operations such as Operation Restore Hope, Operation Noble Response, and Operation Safe Departure. After 50 years in one location, VMGR-352 moved the squadron to MCAS Miramar, California in April 1999. In November 2001, the “Raiders” deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where the squadron suffered its first aircraft and crew loss since Vietnam. On January 9, 2002, Raider 04 crashed into a mountainside in Pakistan killing all seven crewmembers. The “Raiders” continued to fight the War on Terrorism from 2002 to 2009 while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In August 2004, the “Raiders” began transitioning to a new era with the delivery of their first KC-130J Super Hercules (BuNo 165736). In 2009, the “Raiders” deployed once again to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In October 2010, VMGR-352 broke new ground by deploying the first of its kind and highly successful Harvest Hawk Weapons System in support of combat operations in Afghanistan. VMGR-352 has enjoyed a wealth of success and heritage due in part to a many men and women and great aircraft. The “Raiders” will remain poised and ready to support Marine Expeditionary Forces well into the future.
