Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1241 - EA-18G Growler, 166928 \'500\', Electronic Attack Squadron ONE FOUR ONE (VAQ-141), NAF Atsugi, Japan. Electronic Attack Squadron ONE FOUR ONE (VAQ-141) was established in July 1987 at NAS Whidbey Island, WA as the twelfth operational EA-6B Prowler squadron. Assigned to Carrier Air Wing EIGHT (CVW-8), the “Shadowhawks” saw combat action on every subsequent deployment while operating the EA-6B Prowler. The Shadowhawks deployed in early 1991 on board USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT(CVN-71) in support of Operation DESERT STORM, employing AGM-88 HARM on the first night of CVW-8’s combat operations. In 1993, VAQ-141 deployed to the Adriatic Sea in support of Operations PROVIDE PROMISE and DENY FLIGHT, enforcing the no-fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina. After numerous DENY FLIGHT missions, the squadron operated from the Red Sea in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH in Iraq. Deploying in 1995, the squadron once more supported Operation SOUTHERN WATCH from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. In June of that year, VAQ-141 deployed to Aviano Air Base, Italy in support of Operation DENY FLIGHT and suppressed enemy air defenses during a successful Combat Search and Rescue mission for Air Force Captain Scott O’Grady. The Shadowhawks provided electronic attack in support of DELIBERATE FORCE over Bosnia later that year. In 1996, the Shadowhawks deployed on board USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67), operating from the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas in support of Operations DELIBERATE GUARD and SOUTHERN WATCH. 1999 saw the return of the Shadowhawks to the USS ROOSEVELT, deploying in support of major combat operations over Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo during Operation ALLIED FORCE. During the same cruise, the Shadowhawks once more supported Operation SOUTHERN WATCH from the Persian Gulf. In 2001, the squadron deployed on board USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) to the Persian Gulf to support Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. During their return trip, the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 unfolded, as the USS ENTERPRISE immediately reversed course and the squadron joined other US forces in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM over Afghanistan. The Shadowhawks returned to the USS ROOSEVELT in 2003 and deployed in support of the first strikes of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, providing threat suppression for coalition forces. In 2005, VAQ-141 again deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, this time conducting combat operations from USS ROOSEVELT and Al Asad Air Base, Iraq so as to provide round-the-clock Airborne Electronic Attack protection for units on the ground. In 2007 the Shadowhawks participated in the first ever RED FLAG ALASKA and deployed to MCAS Iwakuni. The Shadowhawks saw their last deployment with the EA-6B Prowler in 2008 while deployed onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, providing threat suppression over Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. February 2010 saw the Shadowhawks become the first carrier-based EA-18G Growler squadron. In 2011 they deployed on board USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN-77), a maiden deployment for both the Growler and CVN-77. VAQ-141 again saw combat action in Operations NEW DAWN over Iraq and ENDURING FREEDOM over Afghanistan. Immediately following this deployment, the Shadowhawks executed a permanent duty station change to NAF Atsugi, Japan and joined Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5) in the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility. In early 2012, the squadron deployed on board USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73), conducting flight operations in Southeast Asia. With a distinguished history forged in the opening hours of every major conflict since the squadron’s establishment in 1987, the men and women of the Shadowhawks remain committed to their fundamental purpose: to sail and fly “to the sound of guns,” whenever and wherever that may be.
