Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1464 - XX162, Hawk T1, RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine. The Royal Air Force Centre of Aviation Medicine (RAF CAM) is established to provide specialist medical and scientific support; and training, to all 3 Services in the fields of aviation, occupational and environmental medicine; and to provide effective medical support to all aspects of air operations in peace and war. Aviation Medicine Flight is a part of RAF CAM that forms a permanent detachment, based at Ministry of Defence (MOD) Boscombe Down, Wiltshire. The Flight's roles include: the airborne assessment of both complete life support systems and separate items of aircrew equipment, high onset G training and fast jet flying experience for medical personnel; and clinical support to aircrew in order to return them to effective duty: this includes the RAF motion sickness desensitisation programme. Aviation Medicine Flight operates 2 Hawk T Mk 1 aircraft that have extended flight envelopes permitting operation up to + 9.5Gz, achieved at high rates of onset. The aircraft have also been modified to include extensive video and data recording suites. Hawk XX162 was built by British Aerospace at Dunsfold in 1976 as an early production Hawk T Mk 1 that formed part of the first delivery of Hawks to the RAF. It served at RAF stations Valley, Kemble and Abingdon, including a brief spell with the Red Arrows Aerobatic Team. In 1992, the aircraft was transferred to the Institute of Aviation Medicine at Farnborough. In 1994 the Institute of Aviation Medicine was disbanded and replaced by the Royal Air Force School of Aviation Medicine and the aircraft was relocated to MOD Boscombe Down. In 1998 the School of Aviation Medicine merged with the Aviation Medicine Training Centre at RAF North Luffenham to form the Centre of Aviation Medicine based at RAF Henlow.
