Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1465 - M40-08, Hawk Mk.108, 15 Squadron, Butterworth AB. No. 15 Squadron was established in 1994 at Butterworth Air Base, initially replacing No.3 Flying Training Centre (3FTC) as the RMAF’s Fighter Lead-In Training (FLIT) Unit. The Squadron was first established with a strength of 12 Light-Attack MB339A aircraft until delivery of the BAE Systems Hawk was completed after which, the Squadron operated both the Light-Attack and Training variants of the Hawk, alongside the MB339A. No. 15 Squadron identified themselves with the call sign “PANJI”. With the introduction of MB339CD in 2009, No 3 FTC was reactivated at Kuantan Air Base leaving No 15 Squadron to operate the Hawk Mk.108 and Mk.208 Aircraft in their primary role of Fighter Lead-In Training. Additionally, the squadron also conducts Offensive Air Support (OAS), Close Air Support Mission (CAS) and limited Defensive Counter Air (DCA) operation as secondary roles. No. 15 Squadron is consistently involved with most major air exercises such as EX BERSAMA LIMA, EX BERSAMA SHIELD, EX PARADISE, EX ELANG MALINDO, EX AIR THAMAL, EX ANGSA and EX COPE TAUFAN. In 2013, No. 15 Squadron combined with No. 6 Squadron, was involved with OPS DAULAT in Lahad Datu, deploying two Instructor Pilots and two Hawk Aircraft to Labuan Air Base. With a Squadron motto of ‘WE TRAIN THE WAY WE FIGHT’, the squadron’s main objective is to produce Fighter Pilots of the highest quality to support RMAF operational requirements. The Hawk Mk.108 is fitted with FLIR, Laser Range-Finder, RWR and CMDS and has a cockpit with Multi-Purpose Display and HUD, providing modern fighter training capabilities. The Aircraft is also capable of carrying an array of Air to Ground and Air to Air weapons, as well as the 30mm Aden Canon.
