The United States Air Force’s first Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Squadron, the 11th Reconnaissance Squadron, was activated in March 1942 as the 11th Observation Squadron, training aircrews in reconnaissance, artillery adjustment, bombing and strafing. The squadron has been deactivated and reactivated to proudly serve the Air Force in many conflicts, including Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The Squadron has earned 10 combat streamers in Southeast Asia. From 1971 to 1979 it became the 11th Tactical Drone Squadron testing unmanned reconnaissance platforms and new technology air-to-surface missiles. Since reactivation at Creech AFB in 1995, the 11th Reconnaissance Squadron has served in the Balkans enforcing the Dayton Peace Accords, as well as serving in Operation ALLIED FORCE, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. The 11th Attack Squadron maintained the distinction of being the USAF’s only dual-Major Weapons System Launch and Recovery Formal Training Unit for MQ-1B Predator and MQ-9 Reaper. The squadron conducts flying qualification, upgrade training, and continuation training for MQ-9 Reaper aircrew. The squadron primarily provides flight and ground instruction to active duty, reserve, National Guard, contract and allied aircrew in launch and recovery, enabling world-wide Remote Split Operations.
