SH Avn Stds along with the Rotary Wing Operational Evaluation and Training Unit (RWOETU) were initially formed as part of R&S Wing at RAF Benson on 6th October 1997. The unit expanded further with the addition of the Joint Helicopter Command Operational Evaluation Unit (JHC OEU) on 1st October 2009. With the advent of the Aviation Warfare Branch, RWOETU and the JHC OEU were re-mustered with the reformation of 22 Sqn on 14th May 2020. On the same occasion, SH Avn Stds was also re-mustered to become part of JHC Aviation Standards alongside Army Aviation Standards. SH Avn Stds continues to deliver single service assurance to JHC that RAF SH Squadron personnel are competent in role. Assurance is also provided to 2 Group that RAF 32 Squadron and RAF 84 Squadron personnel are also competent in role under a memorandum of understanding. The aircraft depicted are those operated on by the flight aircrew. SH Avn Stds remains located at RAF Benson in the CAE Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility, although SH Avn Stds examiners routinely operate out of RAF Odiham also.
