Using displays, flypasts and ground engagement, the Red Arrows have a unique role and capability – to showcase the Royal Air Force and represent the United Kingdom on a global stage. In 2025, millions of people will see these performances, which aim to inspire through a demonstration of world-class teamwork. The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team is a great British brand, recognisable to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Indeed, no other UK military unit provides such a potent soft power offer. The team is a convening force, bringing together a wide variety of audiences at home or overseas – having the ability to focus attention on important themes in an unrivalled way, whether they be defence, trade, prosperity or promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Based at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, the team flies the BAE Systems Hawk T1 for its nine-aircraft display, which changes each season. Formed 60 years ago, and having completed some 5,000 shows in 57 countries, the Red Arrows have a rich heritage. However, it is a constant pursuit for excellence and mission to inspire future aviators that provides focus for its 150 highly-trained team members. These personnel are drawn from the RAF’s Whole Force – regular, reserve, civilian and contractors. They include experienced pilots, who have all previously flown on the frontline, and the Blues – the team’s skilled engineers and support staff. During 2025, they will all play their part in making the Red Arrows the very best of British.
