Description
Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1769 - Number 83 Expeditionary Air Group Royal Air Force.
No. 83 Group RAF was formed on 1st April 1943, becoming one of the main elements of the Allied Second Tactical Air Force supporting 21st Army Group during the 1944-45 campaign in northwestern Europe. Disbanded in April 1946, reformed in Germany in July 1952 and then disbanded once again in June 1958, the Group was re-formed as No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group on 1st April 2006 to command the Royal Air Force contribution to operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East. In August 2013, the threat of conflict with Syria saw an extension of the 83 EAG mission to include the Defence of UK interests in Cyprus, within an expanded Joint Operating Area spanning 2000 miles. Since September 2014, the EAG has provided the core UK air contribution to the fight against Da’esh in Iraq and Syria, Operation SHADER. Then, from October 2024 and concurrently with the continuing Op SHADER, the EAG delivered the full range of air power roles in its contributions to coalition operations to maintain freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, air-drop humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza and protect coalition forces and civilian populations from air attack, ultimately helping to maintain regional stability during a volatile time. From the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Oman, and with personnel deployed across three continents, 83 EAG supports and executes air operations across the spectrum of warfighting, exercises and regional engagement in support of UK national and coalition objectives. We take pride and purpose from our forebears and our motto: ‘A Deux Plus Forts’ – Two are Stronger than One.
