On 5 September 2024, Medium Helicopter Training Squadron 402 (HMHT-402) was re-activated at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina and re-assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 41 (MAG-41). On the following day, 6 September 2024, the squadron was redesignated Marine Fighter Training Squadron 402 (VMFT-402). Organized under the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing of the Marine Corps Reserve, this new squadron was assigned the mission of providing instruction to active and reserve Fleet Marine Forces and Fleet squadrons through dissimilar adversarial aerial combat tactics. The squadron is the second adversary squadron of the United States Marine Corps and the first to begin flying the repatriated Swiss F-5 Tiger II of the Avionics Reconfiguration and Tactical/Modernization for Inventory Standardization (ARTEMIS) program, designated the F-5N+ Tiger II. The ARTEMIS program improves the ‘Grim Reapers’ ability to provide accurate and modern threat replication. The ‘Grim Reapers’ continue to provide dissimilar air-to-air combat training and aggressor support to numerous USMC/USN/USAF units as well as foreign aviation and ground units, including the USMC’s Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course and the USN’s Fighter Weapons School ‘TOPGUN’.
