Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1832 - 15-5125 '52 FS', F-35A Lightning II, 52nd Fighter Squadron, 944th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.
The 52d Fighter Squadron traces its lineage to 22 November 1940, when it was constituted as the 52d Pursuit Squadron (Fighter) and activated on 1 January 1941 at Albrook Field in the Panama Canal Zone. Flying the P-26 Peashooter, P-36 Hawk, P-40 Warhawk, and P-39 Airacobra, the squadron formed a crucial element of the air defense network protecting the Panama Canal, one of the world’s most vital strategic chokepoints. Operating from Albrook and France Field, as well as a forward detachment at Seymour Island in the Galápagos, the squadron conducted antisubmarine patrols, regional air defense, and reconnaissance missions throughout the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific during the early years of World War II. After contributing significantly to the defense of critical sea lanes and regional security, the unit was disbanded on 25 May 1944 as wartime requirements shifted. Reconstituted on 20 June 1949 and redesignated the 52d Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, the unit activated at Hamilton Air Force Base, California. Mobilized briefly in June 1951 during the Korean War, the squadron was inactivated shortly thereafter as its personnel were reassigned to strengthen other interceptor units supporting continental air defense. The modern 52d Fighter Squadron draws its contemporary roots from the 944th Operations Group Detachment 2, whose pioneering efforts shaped the development of the F-35 training enterprise at Luke Air Force Base. As the Air Force Reserve Command’s first organization dedicated to F-35 Foreign Military Sales training, Det 2 revitalized the 944th Fighter Wing’s flightline presence and played a central role in receiving the first international F-35A aircraft in 2016. Its instructors and support personnel established the foundational training framework for pilots from Japan, South Korea, Israel, Australia, Italy, and other partner nations. Det 2 became an essential hub for developing allied fifth-generation capability, strengthening global partnerships, and advancing interoperability across the F-35 enterprise. On 6 August 2021, this legacy transitioned into the reactivation of the 52d Fighter Squadron under the 944th Operations Group. Today the “NINJAS” fly the F-35A Lightning II and train future fifth-generation fighter pilots, carrying forward a heritage that spans from the defense of the Panama Canal to the birth of a global F-35 training network.
