Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1133 - Mirage 2000D, 617 \'133-IS\', Escadron de Chasse 1/3, BA133 Nancy - Ochey. The “1/3 Navarre” Fighter Squadron inherited the history of the Flights SPA 95, SPA 153 and SPA 62 who date back to WW1. Having flown the “Nieuport”, “Spad” and “Farman” aircraft during WW1, the 3 Flights moved to Thionville as part of the 1st Fighter Regiment. In 1932, SPA 62 detached from the 2 others and moved to Etampes in the air defence role. A year later, SPA 95 and SPA 153, who had moved to Reims, were equipped with “Morane-Saulnier MS 225”, before flying the “Curtiss H75” during WWII. These flights belonged to the 1/4 Group and operated in the initial fight for France. After the Squadron moved to North Africa to protect the port of Dakar. SPA 62 had the air defence mission over Paris until it was mothballed when France was occupied. Joining the Allies, the 1/4 Group flew on “P-39 Airacobra” protecting convoys at sea, followed then on the “P-47 Thunderbolt”, striking against enemy trains and lines of communication. Being part of the then Free French Forces, the Squadron was baptised with the name “Navarre”. In 1947, the 1/4 Group became 1/3 Group “Navarre” and rerolled on the “Spitfire” in order to deploy rapidly for Indochina. On 1st November 1950, the 1/3 “Navarre” Fighter Squadron was born. The jet era began with the “Vampire” and “F-84E Thunderjet”, whereas SPA 62 was reformed at Reims in 1952 on the “F-84G Thunderjet”. This flight then moved on to Saint-Dizier to perform bombing and air support missions. The “Navarre” Squadron was involved in the creation of the “Patrouille de France” in 1953 and also in the Suez Crisis, along with SPA 62. In 1959, equipped with “F-100 Supersabre”, the 1/3 took on the nuclear deterrent mission and were based is Lahr, Germany. In 1966, the “Mirage IIIE” arrived, changing their role into ground attack and air defence, whilst also moving back to the base at Nancy/Ochey, France. SPA 62 was reformed at Orange in 1981 to train new fighter pilots on “Mirage F1”. The current “Mirage 2000D”, was delivered to the 1/3 “Navarre” in 1993; SPA 62 re-joined as the 3rd flight in 1995. Since then, the 1/3 “Navarre” Fighter Squadron has been involved in operations over Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan and Libya, using precision weapons day or night in all weathers. L’Escadron de Chasse 1/3 Navarre est l’héritier des traditions des escadrilles SPA 95, SPA 153, et SPA 62 de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Après avoir volé sur « Nieuport », « Spad » et autres « Farman » durant ce conflit, les 3 escadrilles rejoignent Thionville au sein du 1er Régiment de Chasse. En 1932, la SPA 62 est détachée des deux autres escadrilles et rejoint Etampes avec pour mission la défense aérienne. L’année suivante, des « Morane-Saulnier MS 225 » équipent alors la SPA 95 et la SPA 153 à Reims, avant de passer sur « Curtiss H75 » pendant le second conflit mondial. Ces escadrilles appartiennent alors au GC I/4 et participent à la campagne de France puis partent en AFN pour protéger le port de Dakar. La SPA 62, quant à elle, défend le ciel de Paris au sein de son unité puis sera dissoute quand la France sera occupée. Se joignant aux alliés, le GC I/4 volera sur « P-39 Airacobra » au cours de missions de protection de convois en haute mer, puis sur « P-47 Thunderbolt » pour l’attaque de trains et de voies de communication. Le nom de Navarre est alors adopté car l’unité appartient aux FAFL. En 1947, le groupe devient GC I/3 Navarre et est transformé sur « Spitfire » pour partir rapidement en Indochine. Le 1er novembre 1950, l’EC 1/3 Navarre voit le jour. L’ère de l’avion à réaction débute avec l’arrivée des « Vampire » puis les « F-84E Thunderjet » tandis que la SPA 62 est réactivée en 1952 à Reims sur « F-84G Thunderjet ». Cette escadrille part ensuite à Saint Dizier avec pour mission principale le bombardement et l’appui feu. Le Navarre participe à la création de la Patrouille de France en 1953 ainsi qu’à la crise de Suez à laquelle la SPA 62 prend part également. En 1959, le 1/3 reçoit les « F-100 Supersabre » sur la base de Lahr en Allemagne et se voit attribuer la mission nucléaire. En 1966, les « Mirage III E » d’attaque au sol conventionnelle et de défense aérienne équipent l’escadron qui rentre en France à Ochey. La SPA 62, de son côté, est affectée en 1981 à la formation des jeunes pilotes sur « Mirage F1 » à Orange. L’avion actuel, le « Mirage 2000D » vient enfin équiper le Navarre en 1993 et la SPA 62 rejoint alors l’escadron en 1995. Depuis, l’EC 1/3 Navarre s’est illustré dans les ciels de Bosnie-Herzégovine, Kosovo, République Démocratique du Congo, Afghanistan et Libye en délivrant de l’armement de précision par tout temps.
