The 36th Fighter Squadron Fabulous Flying Fiends are motivated, lethal warriors with a proud history dating back to the inception of the 36th Aero Squadron at Kelly Field, Texas in June 1917. Shortly thereafter, the 36th saw action in World War I over the skies of France. The unit’s third Squadron Commander, 1Lt Quentin Roosevelt - son of President Teddy Roosevelt - once wrote his father about the pilots he served with: “Father, I command a wilder bunch of roughnecks than your roughriders ever dared to be.” Between WWI and WWII the squadron picked up the “Flying Fiends” title for it’s daring airshow performances. “Fabulous” was added at a later date, and well deserved. The “Fabulous Flying Fiends” have been a decisive part of every Pacific conflict - WWII, the Korean conflict, and Vietnam earning 13 unit citations and 23 service and campaign streamers. The Fiends have flown 21 different aircraft types including the P-40 Warhawk, P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang, F-80 Shooting Star, F-86 Sabre, F-105 Thunderchief, and F-4C Phantom II. The 36th Fighter Squadron now flies the world\'s premier fighter - the single seat, single engine, single tail, supersonic, multi-role, 9G, Block 40 F-16CG Viper. Stationed at Osan AB, ROK, the Fiends are the most forward deployed fighter squadron in the US Air Force providing the first line of defense against North Korean aggression. The Fiend arsenal includes superb tactics, overwhelmingly lethal air-to-air ordnance, Night Vision Goggles, and the pinpoint precise destructive capability of Paveway III Laser Guided Bombs.
