Formed in February 2024 under the Air Command C2 Review Programme, the Typhoon Air Wing brings together the RAF’s front-line Typhoon squadrons as a single Force Element within No 1 Group. Operating under the Wittering Model, this structure ensures clarity of command and focus on delivering combat air power while station commands concentrate on people and infrastructure. It reflects the evolution of air power command and control, enabling agility and resilience in a complex global security environment. The Air Wing draws strength from the heritage and operational experience of its constituent squadrons: from the pioneering days of No 1(F) and No II(AC) Squadrons on the Western Front, to the first Typhoon operations led by No 3(F) Squadron, and the distinguished service of No 6 Squadron, No IX(B) Squadron, No XI(F) Squadron and No 12(B) Squadron across multiple theatres. Supported by No 29 Squadron’s world-class training and tactics expertise, these units deliver a spectrum of capability — Quick Reaction Alert at home and overseas, NATO Air Policing in the Baltic and Black Sea regions, and sustained multi-role operations such as Operation SHADER in the Middle East. Today, the Typhoon Air Wing stands at the forefront of UK and allied air power. From defending the UK’s skies 24/7 to projecting force across Europe and beyond, its squadrons combine cutting-edge technology with over a century of operational excellence, ensuring the Royal Air Force remains ready to protect the nation and meet its global commitments.
