Special Projects Patrol Squadron ONE (VPU-1) was established on 1 March 1996, following 13 Years of existence as a detachment under the auspices of a host patrol squadron and 13 years as an independent unit under Commander Patrol Wing FIVE. The expanding level of worldwide tensions created an operational requirement for a specially trained unit, which has both the flexibility and quick reaction profile to respond to immediate tasking for high level commanders. Since its inception, Special Projects Patrol Squadron ONE has established a reputation for operational expertise, rapid response, and professionalism. Since 1991, VPU-1 has served admirably in Operations DESERT STORM, RESTORE/CONTINUE HOPE, DENY FLIGHT/PROVIDE PROMISE, SHARP GUARD, SUPPORT HOPE, UNITED SHIELD, UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, SOUTHERN WATCH, DELIBERATE GUARD, EAGLE EYE, SILVER WAKE, NOBLE ANVIL/ALLIED FORCE and ENDURING FREEDOM. VPU-1 has earned two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards, three Navy Unit Commendations, five Meritorious Unit Commendations, and four consecutive Battle E Ribbons for outstanding operational performance.
