RAF Brize Norton’s mission statement is to ‘Prepare for and deliver global Air Mobility Operations’. The Station crest depicts a knight’s helmet in front of a castle gateway to symbolize the Gateway to Operations seated on the station motto “Transire Confidenter”, Move with Confidence. The largest Main Operating Base in the RAF, the station accommodates the RAF’s strategic and tactical air transport and air-to-air refuelling fleets, operating the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Airbus A400M Atlas and Airbus A330 MRTT Voyager. RAF Brize Norton was opened in 1937 as a training station and was occupied by the USAF in 1950s during the increased tension of the Cold War. The base was formally returned to the RAF on 1 April 1965. The repatriation of British personnel was relocated to Brize Norton on 8 September 2011 when RAF Brize Norton became the sole “Air Point of Embarkation”, the main operating base for RAF air transport and in-air refuelling in support of the defence of the United Kingdom’s Sovereign airspace.
