Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1826 - ZH860, Merlin HM2, 814 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Gannet, Prestwick International Airport.

HMS GANNET was established at Prestwick International Airport in 1972 when the site was selected for its excellent weather record and communications. Having served as the Main Operating Base for four Naval Air Squadrons, HMS GANNET’s final permanent Squadron (819 NAS) was disbanded in November 2001 leaving an independent Royal Navy Search and Rescue flight – GANNET SAR Flight - as the sole resident, operating the Sea King HU Mk 5 with 5 crews maintaining 15 minutes readiness by day and 45 minutes by night year round. Responsible for approximately 98,0000 Nm² encompassing Ben Nevis to the North, the Lake District to the South and stretching 200 miles West of Ireland into the North Atlantic, GANNET SAR Flight was frequently the busiest SAR unit in the UK. Twice breaking the record for most rescues in a single year (357 in 2007 and 447 in 2009), notable rescues included the stricken submarine HMCS Chicoutimi (October 2004), the Riverdance Ferry (January 2008), and the Glencoe avalanches (January 2013). Following the disbandment of GANNET SAR Flight in 2016, HMS GANNET now serves as a Forward Operating Base for the Royal Navy’s Merlin Helicopter Force, enabling persistent operations in the North Atlantic and protecting UK Submarine operations from the Clyde. HMS GANNET also regularly hosts aviation detachments from across the Fleet Air Arm and wider Defence as well as international partners.
